Seeing the Light
The Jakarta Post - WEEKENDER | Tue, 09/23/2008 2:38 PM |
At this time last year, the WEEKENDER cover story focused on spirituality and the quest to find inner peace in this often mad, bad and dangerous world of ours. Some of those profiled had turned their backs on organized religion to seek their own spiritual path in life. This time around, we examine the other side: the growing number of young people who are finding the answers they need in their religion.
What explains this “return to the fold”, so to speak, whether it is to mosques, churches or temples? Contributing writer Maggie Tiojakin writes that much of it is due to the ability of religious institutions to change with the times and serve the needs of the young generation, while staying true to the spirit of their religion.
We also hear from two people who took time to discover what suited them in life, among them an American who has embraced the traditional Javanese kejawen belief system. There is also news from Angelique Widjaja, the former national number one tennis player who is enjoying a new career in sports management. Interestingly, Angie chooses faith among her most important things in life.
Finally, my sincere best wishes to all our readers and contributors celebrating Idul Fitri.
