KUPANG, E. Nusa Tenggara: The WZ Johannes General Hospital in Kupang has suffered losses worth about Rp 12.1 billion (US$1.28 million) after its main building was razed by fire Sunday evening.

The fire destroyed drug stocks, medical equipment, oxygen tanks, a 400-square-meter pharmacy building and computer sets worth a total Rp 8.132 billion, secretary of the East Nusa Tenggara disaster management coordination body, Sentianus Medi, said in his written report Tuesday.

The fire also damaged a three-story, 600-square-meter medical records unit worth Rp 1.923 billion and building equipment worth Rp 2.05 billion.

"The loss does not include a branch of Bank NTT on the first floor in the burned building," Sentianus said.

Preliminary police investigations have found four spots thought to be the source of Sunday's fire.

Oebobo Police chief First Insp. Januarius Seran said the police had questioned nine witnesses, consisting of two pharmacy workers and seven security guards.

"We are now waiting for test results conducted at the Bali Police forensics laboratory," he said.

Hospital director Yovita Anike Porsiana Mitak said there were no fatalities in the fire.

Two babies died from pregnancy abnormalities and not because of any trauma sustained by the mother during the evacuation to the Wirasakti Army hospital, she added. -- JP
