KPK chief praises VP's report on car gift
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Thu, 09/25/2008 6:08 PM | National
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar praised Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Thursday for reporting a gift in the form of a car from the biggest car manufacturer in the country, PT Toyota Astra Motor.
Azhar said Kalla filed the report last week and that the commission was examining whether the gift had anything to do with Kalla's vice presidency.
The company symbolically gave Kalla a popular hybrid car Toyota Prius at the official opening of Toyota spare parts center in West Cikarang, West Java, on Sept. 4.
Upon receiving the gift, Kalla promised to report it KPK and that he would not use the car for private use.
"This is a good example from the vice president. If the vice president can do this, the others surely can do better given the good example," Antasari said. (ast)

VP Kalla's Car Gift.
In your article about PT Toyota Astra Motor's gift of a Toyota Prius to Vice President Kala you state that "the commission (KPK) was examining whether the gift had anything to do with Kalla's vice presidency?" Why would the KPK waste time on a question that has an obvious answer? Why did Astra Motor not give such a valuable gift to me or anybody else? Why such hullabaloo over the fact that VP Kalla filed a report about the car gift? VP Kalla could possibly buy firm PT Toyota Astra Motor outright; with cash; he doesn't need a car as a gift unless Astra Motor would want to score a point. That much is obvious. However, you underplay that the car was given "symbolically". I am not certain what that means. Perhaps Astra Motor gave the gift to the "State", however, in the Indonesian context that does not mean much either, as, for instance, many a high state official runs state business through a personal bank account.
In any case, shouldn't the KPK concentrate more on all those politicians who still have not filed their net worth? So many live seemingly well beyond their means although their salaries are, for Indonesian standards, high. Praising VP Kalla for reporting the gift and not using the car personally is stating the obvious!
