Sarawak Police shot dead three armed Indonesian, who are suspected of carrying out several armed robberies, during an operation near Kuching on Wednesday, Malaysia's Star daily reported.

State police commissioner Dep. Comr. Datuk Mohmad Salleh said police had mounted a massive manhunt for two other suspects who had fled into a jungle.

As the fugitives might have been injured, he appealed to private clinics to report to police anyone seeking treatment for injuries.

The other three men, killed at Kilometer 38 of Jl. Rambungan, Matang, were in their 30s.

"Police seized a pistol, 10 bullets, two parang (machetes), a knife, a screwdriver and a face mask from them," Mohmad told reporters at the state police headquarters.

Mohmad said two Indonesian passports were found on the dead men. The third man did not carry any personal documents. He said initial investigations revealed that the group could have been involved in six other armed robberies in Petra Jaya area recently.

During the latest incident, he said, police opened fire after one of the men pulled out a pistol and charged at them during a raid launched after a public tip-off.

Mohmad said the suspected robbers, who were on foot, were believed to have targeted a bungalow, but had turned away after finding out it had a security guard.

He said the group could have been working with local accomplices, who had provided the car to take them around to commit the crimes.
