Your comments on the stampede in Pasuruan, East Java, that killed 21 people when thousands rushed to receive cash gifts from a local philanthropist.

The victims died from being trampled while in a weak physical condition after two weeks of fasting. And this happened because the distribution of the cash was not conducted in coordination with local authorities.

We could prevent such an accident from happening again by giving tickets to each person in a queue, and local authorities should be involved in such events.

They did not know they were going to die! The solution?

Why isn’t the money distributed from house-to-house of poor families? There would be no queuing and no danger.

Please, President SBY, look to this incident. There are so many poor people in this country.
To prevent such an accident from happening again, rich people should distribute their zakat through credible zakat organizers.

It’s a pity. If someone wants to give a gift, he or she must have a list of people in the neighborhood or community unit (RT/RW). The donors should know how many poor families there are and it is better if the donations are given from door-to-door because such this incident was not the first of its kind.

First, I’d like to express my condolences to all the families of the victims in Pasuruan. It is so ironic, while here, in such a big city, Rp 50,000 means nothing if you want to go shopping in a supermarket, meanwhile in Pasuruan they died for less than US$ 3. I hope this will be the last incident like this.

About Ramadhan tending to make us be more consumptive, it is because we only focus on what we buy and wear for Idul Fitri. It doesn’t mean we mustn’t buy new clothes or cook special food for Idul Fitri, but we mustn’t forget the objective of fasting during Ramadan, which is to make us more sensitive to other people’s suffering and refrain ourselves from any wrongdoings, not only in Ramadan but also afterwards.

So, let’s celebrate the day of the victory in a modest way, because what is more important is not about new clothes but what kind of person we’ll be when the holy month is over.

The Ramadan stampede disaster shows that responsibility goes beyond literally following Ramadan rules. What are these rules for? Maybe they are there to improve the social welfare system.

It happened because poor people have no other way to get money. They said they still wanted to go to a similar occasion next year, even if it means risking their own life for
thirty thousand rupiah. Maybe next time there should be a better coordination with the police and this kind of incident would run smoothly and without any victims.

Why can’t they just give money out quietly instead of showing off. Maybe the poor should ask them to be buried in the rich man’s yard to remind that showing off costs LIVES.

Did the government respond in any way to this news. I hope they will feel embarrassed to see that poor people died just for some $4.

Regardless how good the motive is, Syaikhon must be responsible for this incident and taken to the court.

It happened because it’s out of hand of an organization and lack of the awareness of those in queues.

I hope someone up there in their luxury office who said that Indonesia is not a poor country will realize that his statements were wrong.
