Five days before the end of Ramadan, the National Police announced Friday, there had been 118 accidents and 41 deaths reported of people travelling home.

"This morning six deaths were reported, making a grand total of 41 road deaths so far," police security advocacy head, Ir. Gen. A. Boedihardjo, told reporters during a field inspection in Purwakarta on Friday.

Police have been monitoring homeward-bound travel, traditionally known as Mudik, from seven days before the end of the holy month. Boedihardjo said that during the first day of monitoring, there were 87 accidents reported from all parts of the country. No accidents were reported on the second day, while there were 31 accidents as of Friday morning, or the third day.

"We are inspecting the field to check all the necessary infrastructure to maintain safety such as road separators and such, prepared by several related government agencies. If we don't find any, we will pursue the related authority to make sure they fulfill their duties," Boedihardjo said, referring to road infrastructure providers such as those under the Transportation Ministry.

Present at the inspection, president director of state insurance company PT Jasa Rahardja, Diding S. Anwar, said all victims of accidents that ride on public transportation would receive
compensation from the company.

"Rp 25 million for death, Rp 10 million for heavy injuries and Rp 25 million for permanent disability," Diding said.

This year, he said, the company distributes 130 service posts in various areas along routes heavy with homeward-bound travelers.

"The posts will help the distribution of the compensation, five days after the accident at the longest. Families of the victims will surely be compensated," he said.
