City stages patrols on newcomers

JAKARTA: In a bid to reduce the number of people with social problems in the city, officials will crack down on those without residential permits issued by the Jakarta administration. (The Jakarta Post)
<P> Head of the demography and civil registration agency Franky Pandjaitan said Thursday the administration would monitor people coming from rural areas into the city at entrances into Jakarta, such as bus terminals, stations, airports and tollgates.

In 2007, the city administration caught 1,140 people who did not qualify as new urbanites. The agency recorded 109,000 new people coming into Jakarta last year and 125,000 in 2006. -- JP
