KPU disqualifies 2,152 candidates

The General Elections Commission (KPU) announced Friday that 2,152 candidates listed by political parties were not eligible to take part in the 2009 legislative election. Only 11,868 candidates, or 83 percent of the 14,020 names, could be included in the KPU's temporary list of legislative candidates, KPU member Endang Sulastri said after a plenary session between the commission and 30 party representatives. "Most of the ineligible candidates come from new parties," Endang said, adding they were disqualified because they failed to submit required documents, such as character references, medical certificates and authenticated school diplomas. The KPU will display the temporary list of candidates on its website, www.kpu.go.id, and on several media outlets. Criticism and public input will be accepted until Oct. 9. Parties whose candidates were disqualified will be given time to clarify their status between Oct. 10 and 14. The KPU will announce the final list of candidates on Oct. 31. -- JP (The Jakarta Post)
