JAKARTA: The city administration will keep the regularly scheduled Car-Free Day on Sunday along thoroughfares Jend. Sudirman and M.H. Thamrin even though the city is usually deserted in the days ahead of Idul Fitri.
The holiday is expected to fall on Oct. 1 and 2 this year.
The main thoroughfares will be closed to private cars, motorcycles, taxis and three-wheeled vehicles from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Environmental Management Board record shows limiting vehicle usage for several hours on Aug. 31 reduced dust pollution by 15.31 percent and carbon monoxide by 58.66 percent.
South Jakarta municipality plans to roll out its first Car-Free Day event along Jl. H.R. Rasuna Said on Oct. 12.
The program will feature live entertainment, a bazaar, sporting activities and exhibitions. -- JP

This is a fantastic initiative and the city administration deserves support from everyone to extend the hours and dates of closures!!!!
