TANGERANG: Hundreds of former workers of PT Dong Joe, a shoe producer for Reebok, looted the factory on Jl. Raya Rajek, Pasar Kemis district, in Tangerang regency Friday.

They had gathered at the factory to ask for unpaid salaries and severance.

None of the company management showed up at the factory.

Ismail, one of the workers, said they had decided to steal machines or anything else worth selling to get money to celebrate Idul Fitri, Muslim's biggest festive holiday.

"We've been trying to get our money since 2006 but to no avail," he said.

The company, which once employed 6,300 workers, was shut down because of financial difficulties. -- JP

This culture of ransacking a factory or office must be stopped. At the same time the relevant govt department should have stepped in and auctioned of the goods and machinery to pay for the unpaid wages instead of keeping the workers waiting.
