BALIKPAPAN, East Kalimantan: Australian expatriates (above picture) watch a live broadcast of the Australian rules football grand final match between the Hawthorn Hawks and the Geelong Cats at Hotel Le Grandeur Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Saturday.
More than 200 expatriates, many traveling from Jakarta and Surabaya, gathered at the hotel to watch the game, which the Hawks won 18.7 (115) to 11.23 (89) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
It was the Hawthorn's first Australian Football League title since 1991, the Associated Press reported.
Australian rules football, which is similar to rugby, is a popular sport in Australia. The match day was declared a national holiday in Australia, according to Dean Reardon, who coordinated the Balikpapan gathering.
"Almost everyone in Australia took a break from activities to watch the grand final match today. Those in Kalimantan have also left work to come and support their favorite team," Reardon told The Jakarta Post.
Initiated by the Borneo Bears, the gathering also raised funds for a forest and animal preservation program.
