President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said it was too soon to announce who his running partner would be, but added that Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla was the likely candidate, state news agency Antara reported Sunday.

"There will be a legislative election. Many developments will unfold, including the dynamics of the Golkar Party and JK himself," Yudhoyono said referring to Kalla by his initials.

Yudhoyono told journalists gathering at the State Palace on Sunday that he would run for a second term in next year's presidential election, confirming an already widely accepted notion.

The formal announcement of his candidacy will be announced after the legislative election, or after next April.

The retired army general is Indonesia's first directly elected president, winning an election in 2004 in a landslide against then president Megawati Soekarnoputri. However, recent surveys show the President is losing a renewed popularity contest with Megawati.

Most analysts have linked his loss of favor with rising food and energy prices, and his decision to raise fuel prices by an average 28.8 percent on June 24. (and)
