The number of homeward-bound travelers from Jakarta is expected to reach 2.7 million by the end of the month, increasing slightly from 2.6 million last year, the police said.

Edison Sianturi, head of Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Agency's monitoring division, told
Tempointeraktif.com on Sunday that roughly 2 million people had fled the city as of Saturday night.
The outflow of travelers, he said, peaked four days before Idul Fitri, which was on Saturday, with about 680,000 city dwellers commencing their journey to enjoy the holiday.

Some 100,000 people would enter the city along with the return of the travelers, he said.

"That's the average number every year. Last year we saw 109,000 newcomers to the city," Edison said.

As a result of urbanization, Jakarta is now home to 9.1 million people, 500,000 of which are aliens," he said referring to those coming to the capital without appropriate identification or a clear permanent address.

On Oct. 23, the city administration will conduct a massive inspection of alien citizens and send them home if they are not equipped with the necessary paperwork, he said.

The paperwork includes a moving permit, letter of good behavior from the police, recommendation letters from Neighborhood Unit (RT), Community Unit (RW) and sub-district office on which the person lives in Jakarta and a work certification. (and)
