DENPASAR: In order to guarantee safety to travelers to and from Bali ahead of Idul Fitri, many inter-provincial bus drivers were asked to take urine tests at Ubung terminal, the largest bus terminal in Denpasar, over the weekend.

The urine tests were carried out by members of a joint team from the Bali Police, Denpasar Transportation Agency and the Bali office of the state insurance company PT Jasa Raharja.

The tests were intended mainly to check whether the drivers were consuming psychotropic substances or not while on duty, I Wayan Gede Susila, head of PT Jasa Raharja's Bali office, said.

"We want to help prevent traffic accidents caused by reckless driving by ensuring that the bus drivers are not influenced by the consumption of psychotropic substances," he said.

"Drivers found to have consumed such substances will be banned from driving. Any such driver has to be replaced."

Out 37 drivers tested on Thursday and Friday, only one was tested positive.

"We ordered him not to drive as it would endanger the passengers," Susila said. -- JP
