Idul Fitri falls on Oct. 1, 2008, the country's second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, announced Saturday.

Oman Fathurohman, deputy of Muhammadiyah's calculations committee Majelis Tarjih, said the decision was made based on its hisab (Islamic calendar calculation method).

Muhammadiyah chairman Haedar Nashir said decisions from other Muslim organization would be acceptable and the organization had no problems with them.

"We highly endorse tolerance and we honor differences," he said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com

Nahdlatul Ulama, the country's largest Muslim organization, has yet to announce when its followers will celebrate Idul Fitri. The group's method is based on rukyah (moon sighting).

The government has declared Oct. 1 and Nov. 2 a national holiday to celebrate Idul Fitri, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. (dre)
