It is tragic, that so many people died and were injured in the stampede. I think things like the stampede happen because of an attitude that is permeating Indonesia — and indeed through society in general.
This is what I call the “me first” attitude: People behaving selfishly and recklessly, with no regard for others. Obviously those who trampled on others were only concerned about themselves. You’ll also see this attitude demonstrated on the streets of Java and Bali. Mindless drivers of cars, trucks and especially motorcycles drive as if though were the only ones on the road.
Their “me first” attitude includes reckless driving without regard for their own safety, or for the lives of others. Besides their disregard for the consequences, they also assume no responsibility for their thoughtless behavior.
Sadly, innocent lives were lost in the stampede. But the headlines don’t tell about the on-going story of the daily damage done on the streets of Indonesia by careless drivers. Both stories beg for a similar conclusion: Be mindful of, and take responsibility for your actions. Have consideration for those around you and, occasionally, let someone else go first.
