MAKASSAR, S. Sulawesi: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Friday the availability of good transportation infrastructure was a basic demand that needed to be met.
"Transportation is an important factor in commercial activities including to boost tourism," he said.
"That's why we need sufficient transportation infrastructure for both people and goods."
Yudhoyono was speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate three transportation infrastructure projects here: the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, a new section of the Makassar toll road and KM Gunung Dempo, currently moored at Soekarno-Hatta Seaport.
Also being officiated over were four vessels to serve remote areas in Central Kalimantan, Papua, West Papua and West Nusa Tenggara provinces.
Yudhoyono said these new projects aimed to boost economy activities in South Sulawesi especially and on Sulawesi Island in general.
He said the government would keep building and developing the capacities of airports and seaports across the country and to increase the number of all transportation fleets.
The President also urged all parties, especially the regional administrations, to maintain and take good care of all the transportation infrastructure in their regions as such projects were expensive to build. -- JP
