JAKARTA: The Jakarta Elections Supervisory Committee removed hundreds of political advertisings in restricted areas -- including those on traffic lights, in public parks and on pedestrian overpasses -- in five municipalities Saturday.
The clean up, which took placed from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday, started at City Hall and spread through main streets and thoroughfares such as Jl. Jend. Sudirman in Central Jakarta, Jl. HR Rasuna Said and Jl. Casablanca in South Jakarta, as well as Jl. Ahmad Yani and Jl. Pramuka in East Jakarta.
The committee cooperated with the agency for public order to take down 340 banners and 15 flags of various political parties.
The committee, however, did not remove banners offering Idul Fitri greetings, allowing political parties to erect such banners in public areas for up to 10 days following Idul Fitri.
The inspection implemented the Jakarta Election Commission's restriction on campaign activities in public places before next year's general elections.
The commission prohibits advertising and campaign rallies as they can disrupt public order. -- JP
