Soekarno-Hatta International Airport customs and excise officers foiled an attempt to smuggle in around Rp 4 billion (US$424,000) worth of diamond jewelry, an official said Thursday.

Didit Prayudi Sidarta, an intelligence officer, said they arrested a 46-year-old Chinese man, identified as WC, with 198 pieces of jewelry hidden in small bags attached to his leg.

Didit said the man, who arrived from Hong Kong on China Airlines flight code CI-679, looked suspicious and was walking stiffly. The officers later examined him and found various jewelry.

The man said he was going to sell the jewelry to several shops in Jakarta. (dre)
