A large store in Batam, My Mart Mall, was razed by fire on Sunday morning with losses estimated in billions of rupiah.
Batam Fire Fighters head Zulhelmi said the fire had started in the basement.
"The fire was first spotted at 9 a.m.," he said on Sunday as quoted by Antara state news agency.
The fire spread rapidly through the store because most of the merchandise sold there was flammable, such as carpets, sofas and beds, Zulhelmi said.
The fire was still not under control at noon on Sunday, despite there being eight fire trucks deployed to put it out.
Zulhelmi said the building had poor access, which made it more difficult for the fire fighters to control the blaze.
"Plus, there were no hydrants at the mall, so we've had difficulty finding water." (and)
