The county's annual price inflation spiked to its highest level in September, rising by 12.14 percent compared to a year earlier on increasing demand during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The Central Statistics Agency reported on Monday that monthly inflation reached 0.97 percent in September, up significantly from 0.51 percent in August.
Head of BPS Distribution and Service Statistics Department, Ali Rosidi, explained that among the 66 cities surveyed by the agency that month, the highest monthly price inflation occurred in Tarakan (2.8 percent), while the lowest was in Manado (0.03 percent).
"Unlike in August, which saw six cities experiencing deflation, in September all cities that were surveyed experienced inflation," Ali said.
Top contributors to September's inflation, he said, were the increase in prices of staple foods such as beef and chicken.
Ali predicted that the pace of inflation in coming months would likely moderate on the assumption that the highest inflation always occurred during the holy month of Ramadan. (and)
