Jakarta administration predicts for less job-seeking newcomers

The number of people migrating to Jakarta from rural areas looking for employment will continue to decline as life gets tougher in the capital, Jakarta population and civil registration agency said Monday.
Agency's head of supervision and control Edison Sianturi said that although post-Idul Fitri holiday migrants were still coming here, the final figure would not exceed last year's.
"People will think twice before agreeing to take their relatives to Jakarta. Unless the relatives have enough skills to survive in the city, they will say no," he said as quoted by

The rate of rural-urban migration has been decreasing over the past five years, from 231,528 people in 2002 to 180,000 in 2006 and 109,000 in 2007.
Edison, however, said that unskilled workers, who are looking for jobs as housemaids, would still comprise the majority of this year's migrant influx. (dre)
