JAKARTA: Actor-turned-politician Rano Karno said he did not have as much time to celebrate Idul Fitri as he would have liked, due to his new position as the deputy regent of Tangerang.

“This is my first Lebaran (Idul Fitri) as a government official ... it’s been quite formal. On the first day we went to the regent’s house and now we’re holding an open house here. It’s different (from my previous Idul Fitri holidays),” Rano was quoted as saying by okezone.com at his home in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, on Friday.

With limited free time, the man who won the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) award for Best Actor through his role in Taksi in 1991, said he would visit his friends next week.

“I’ve only spoken to them by phone,” said the man who has played in more than 70 movies since his debut in Malin Kundang in 1971.

Rano Karno and running mate Ismet Iskandar were elected as Tangerang’s deputy regent and regent respectively earlier this year.

The 48-year-old, who gained popularity through the TV soap Si Doel Anak Sekolahan, said he was careful to accept holiday packages as he was aware that government officials should not received excessive parcels.

“I’ve only received some from public figures and relatives,” said the man who won the Best Child Actor award at the Asian Film Festival in Taipei in 1974, for his role in Rio Anakku (Rio My Son). — JP
