548 deaths during homeward-bound travel

Traffic accidents among this year's homeward-bound Idul Fitri travellers have resulted in 548 deaths thus far, police say.

Monitoring conducted since Sept. 25 had shown that as of Tuesday, there were 1,426 accidents involving motorcycles, 394 involving cars, 110 with busses and 191 with trucks, National Police spokesperson Ir. Gen. Abubakar Nataprawira told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday.

As a result, he said, 548 people had died, 702 had suffered serious injuries and 1,162 had minor injuries in this period.

"The material losses reached around Rp 3.9 billion (US$378,000)," Abubakar said.

An increase in traffic violations was also reported during the holiday season, with police issuing tickets for 25,777 motorcyclists, 7,446 car drivers, 1,244 bus drivers and 2,815 truck drivers.

The violations included running through red lights, not wearing safety helmets and driving without licenses.

During last year's homeward-bound travel for the Idul Fitri season, 1,875 accidents were recorded with 798 deaths, 952 seriously injured and 2,034 with minor injuries. (and)
