TANGERANG: Authorities at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport said Monday they would clamp down on illegal taxis operating there.

"We have been preparing plans to conduct joint operations to net not only illegal taxi drivers but also semi-legal and illegal drivers," airport administrator Herry Bhakti said Monday. He said, besides licensed taxi drivers, those who sought passengers at the airport included taxis without airport stickers and drivers of private minivans.

"We must differentiate illegal drivers and semi-legal drivers. Semi-legal drivers are those who have been trained by airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II but failed to complete the training," he said.

PT Angkasa Pura II once allowed private vehicles to transport passengers to the airport. Later the firm revoked their licenses but the drivers kept hustling for passengers.

Data at the airport administrator's office shows 625 illegal taxis operate at the airport daily.

"We plan to slim the number to 300 through this upcoming clampdown. These 300 can then serve as rental cars, but under one management and according to our rules," Herry said, adding most illegal taxis were owned by people living near the airport or by former airport high-ranking officials. -- JP
