At least 10 former convicts have made it onto a temporary list of candidates for positions in the legislative council of Madiun, West Java, issued by a local election committee.
The convicts were previously jailed for their involvement in various crimes including gambling, fraud and theft.
Election committee member Muhammad Ali Fauzi confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying the candidates had passed all necessary requirements for eligibility.
"As long as they pass the requirements, the committee will include them as candidates," Fauzi said as quoted by Kompas.com.
He further explained that the election regulation only banned convicts who had been jailed for more than five years. Many of those convicted for corruption in Indonesia are put behind bars for less than five years.
Fauzi urged voters to give there feedback on the temporary candidate list, so that those chosen in the final list would be suitable for election.
"The committee has every right, based on input from the community, to scrap any temporary candidates," Fauzi said. (and)
