JAKARTA: The health condition of actor-cum-TV presenter Gugun Gondrong, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor several months ago, has gradually improved after undergoing brain surgery in Singapore, a fellow celebrity says.

"His health condition is improving. He is now responsive and able to open his eyes. He smiles if somebody talks to him," televangelist Jeffry Al Buchory, a close friend of Gugun, was quoted as saying by okezone.com.

Gugun was taken to the National University Hospital in Singapore on Sept. 20 for a second operation after being operated on in Jakarta.

According to his family, he will be treated at the hospital for at least one more month.

"If his condition improves, he will be transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular room," Jeffry, who visited Gugun on Oct. 4, said.

Born Muhammad Gunawan Hendromartono, on Jan. 30, 1969, Gugun is the founder and manager of The Jakmania, an avid group of supporters of the Persija football club.

A charity night recently held at Planet Hollywood to help finance Gugun's medical treatment raised Rp 1 billion (about US$111,111), and was attended by artists and politicians. -JP
