As many as 14 members of the Indonesian and Malaysian Eminent Persons Group (EPG) will meet in a two-day talk on activities and programs to elevate relations between both countries in Kuala Lumpur starting Wednesday.
According to a press release by the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, the Indonesian delegation will be led by former vice president Try Sutrisno, while the Malaysians will be led by Tun Musa Hitam.
The meeting was a continuation of a similar meeting in August in Jakarta. The meeting aimed to iron out potential issues as ties remain testy 51 years after diplomatic relations were established.
Despite having much in common, the two "brothers" have recorder is a long history of feuds. Leaders of both countries agreed the group was essential and inaugurated it in Kuala Lumpur in July this year.
Observers say the belief that Malaysians and Indonesians share a common identity -- religious, ethnic and even linguistic -- has not translated into a relationship that can overcome brewing public mistrust and resentment. (dre)
