President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to hand a presidential decree on extension of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X as Yogyakarta governor in Jakarta in Tuesday afternoon.

State Secretary Hatta Rajasa said Monday that the draft of the decree was completed and it was under the president’s authority whether to hand the decree straight away.

Based in existing regulation, Hamengkubuwono’s tenure would come to an end Oct. 8, despite no gubernatorial election having been held in Yogyakarta.

Prior to the Indonesian Independence in 1945, Yogyakarta was a kingdom ruled by the houses of Hamengkubuwono and Paku Alam. After the independence, Yogyakarta was named Special Region and its gubernatorial positions have been passed down through generations. (dre)
