The Corruption Court on Wednesday sentenced non-active Medan deputy mayor Ramli to four years in prison for embezzling state money in the procurement of fire engines and misusing the provincial budget.
Presiding judge Sutiyono also told Ramli to pay a Rp 200 million (US$21,000) fine or serve two months additional time. The defendant was also told to pay Rp 6,916 billion in restitution.
The sentence was lower than demanded by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of 5 years in jail and Rp 500 million fine.
KPK told the court Ramli had caused the state at least Rp 50.5 billion in losses by embezzling the regional budget between 2002 and 2006. They said that the money went to the defendant and non-active Medan mayor Abdillah, as well as their families, and also to some Medan legislature members and leaders.
Abdillah has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of the embezzlement. (dre)
