JAKARTA: The National Police will from Friday dispatch hundreds of personnel to Sudan's troubled Darfur region as part of a UN peacekeeping mission.

Deputy police chief Comr. Gen. Makbul Padmanegara said Thursday the first batch of 140 officers, grouped under the Indonesian Formed Police Unit, would depart Friday for a one-year stint.

"It is an honor to have our personnel deployed to a peacekeeping operation under the UN Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS)," Makbul said when sending off the personnel at the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, south of Jakarta.

The peacekeepers come from Brimob's elite force and health division. They have undergone training for months and will be accompanied by interpreters during their mission.

National Police deputy chief of operational division Insp. Gen. Rubani Pranoto added the second batch of 140 officers would depart on December. -- JP
