New Police Chief announces reform program

The newly elected National Police Chief Bambang Hendarso has announced reform several programs for his term, focusing on police cultural changea and police education reform.
Bambang said Saturday that culture change was important to erase negative views against the police. He emphasized on police’s habit of collecting money from people, arrogance, and police links with gamblers.
"We have to deal with this problem in order to restore the public trust to police,” he said, adding that the campaign was part of the on Trust Building program in the Police Grand Strategy for 2005-2025.
Bambang said that in line with the culture reform, the police plans to have routine sweeping operations to combat crime and stop policeofficers from asking for illegal levies. The operation would be led by the Surveillance Inspector Comr. Gen. Yusuf Manggabarani,and the police the Professional and Security Division (Propam).
The police chief also promised to improve police’s human resources to avoid wrongful arrest of suspects, as what happened recently on a murder case.
“We need to have special team on DNA examination, experts and anthropology as well as other fields. This kind of mistake must not happen again,” he said.
Bambang said that during his tenure the police will continue to combat the seven major crimes, which include illegal logging, fishing, and mining; drugs; terrorism; people trafficking; and thuggery and street violence.
"We will intensify our cooperation with Interpol, police-to-police cooperation, and community policing to tackle terrorism," he said.
"Another to increase our service to thee people, we will launch a direct number where people can text us message, information or report on crimes," Bambang said. (ast)
