Antara news agency recently reported that Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, would be closed for two and a half hours on Sunday for the Indonesian Military (TNI)'s 63rd anniversary celebrations.
TNI spokesman Sagom Tamboen told Antara that the closure of the airport was for safety reasons, because the anniversary would feature aeronautical acrobatic stunts in Surabaya airspace.
"We have informed the airport authorities as well as commercial airlines, and they understand the airport will be closed," Sagom said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to attend the celebrations that are centered at the Dermaga Ujung naval base in Surabaya. Around 5,000 TNI soldiers will participate in the event.
For the celebrations, TNI soldiers from all forces will participate in a variety of attractions including up to 20 warships, parades and jet flybys. (rid)
