A fire ravaged a densely-populated area in Kampung Muara Ujung, Penjaringan sub-district, North Jakarta, on Sunday night leaving almost 4,000 people homeless, a local official said.
Subdistrict head Budi Santoso said Monday the fire victims were evacuated to a factory building near the location, Antara news agency reported.
The victims took shelter in a large tent where local administrators set up a public health post and a public kitchen.
Firefighters had difficulties in bringing the fire under control, which destroyed 950 houses and had sent 20 fire engines to the site. It eventually died out around 2 a.m. early Monday morning.
Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire. (dre)

I hope that a charitable organization can help them before the victims need to beg Mr. Bakrie for assistance of any kind. (sigh) If on the other hand he's ripe with enthusiasm to do his actual duty, I hope they can inquire as to where he was the day of the fire! Maybe they can ask the Suharto family and the network of cronies for an 'act' of goodwill too? Good luck and peace to all the victims.
