Indonesia has the death penalty for drugs, and yet these people still attempt to smuggle drugs into the country. Is the money they make smuggling the drugs worth risking and gambling their lives?
I wish a drug smuggler could answer me.The only conclusion I can come to is that a lot of people get through the airports with the drugs, and collude with corrupt officials, that's why they take so many chances.
The government should start investigating police members. I think that would bring down the drug problem. And more executions for drug dealers should be carried out. As stated at Soekarno Hatta Airport, "Death Penalty to drug dealers".

Tourist numbers -- Sept. 9, p. 13
Just go back to the old visa system - free, like many other Southeast Asian countries. That would bring in more tourists.

City, turn to trees -- Oct. 7, p. 5
It truly gives hope for the nation to read such stories. Why oh why is it so hard for those in positions of authority to do something like this on a much larger scale? I will definitely visit and give all the support I can. It really does deserve more than a short comment in The Jakarta Post. Dear editor, please do abig story, even a campaign on this, because it is so very important. Let the nation know that this is the future for all Indonesia's children. Its the only way they can have a decent, healthy life. MIKE

I agree one 100 percent with Mike's comment. Why does the whole city/country need to be covered with cement? When are people here going to realize that green areas give the soul rest and help clean the air? Moreover the shade helps keep us cool and absorbs carbon, which helps the planet.

Pornographic bill -- Oct. 7, p.7
In my view, many supporters of the so-called Pornography Bill have legitimate prejudices against pornography; perhaps from a religious or prudish perspective. However, if the bill was more preciesly renamed "The Anti-Tourism, Anti-Art and Anti-Women Bill", the numbers of adherents would sharply decline.

RI will not repeat crisis -- Oct. 6, online
The President is correct that the economic situation - in terms of fundamentals - is not anything like as precarious as in 1997. The Indonesian banking sector had to get its act together post-1997 and much was learned from the mistakes of those days.
What is more difficult to control is the irrational panic that breeds more of itself and which is, unfortunately, very characteristic of investors in Indonesia.
The decision to suspend trading on the stock exchange was the right one in the circumstances. The KL stock exchange has a built-in "circuit breaker" that suspends trading in similar situations and this helps to cushion Bursa Malaysia from short-term panic selling. DAVID

Maid falls to death -- Oct. 4, online
Why are we quarreling about the issue of religion?
It would be better for us to pay attention to the issue of Indonesian unskilled workers. As I understand it, according to Egyptian law, it's forbidden for foreigners to work in the field of unskilled labor in Egypt.
Therefore, it's always difficult for all the relevant parties (embassy, Indonesian government, etc.) to give them legal protection.
For this reason, we should also pay attention to the fact that the so-called Indonesian PJTKIS (Labor Recruitment Agency) is still sending them to Egypt. I don't believe they don't know the regulations in Egypt. On the other hand, the Egyptian employers, vividly and clearly violate their own laws.
In doing so, we can discuss this in a more valuable way and get directly to the problem of Indonesian migrant workers. It's the responsibility of all of us to combat human trafficking.

Planting 100 million trees -- Oct. 9, Online
That is a good program. But it will only waste money if there is no maintenance program after the planting. I think we have enough experience with similar programs that ended in failure.

This initiative by the Indonesian government is to be commended, but must be coupled with effective law enforcement to ensure these trees and existing forests are properly protected.

Planting 100 million trees is very easy. Maintaining those trees afterward is the real job. Therefore, we have to preserve them after the planting so that we will not just waste money.

The idea is perfect, but besides planting trees, the government should impose a law forbidding the illegal logging that has led to so much destruction, floods and pollution.

This is wonderful news -- congratulations to the Indonesian government for realizing how important trees are to the environment. Hopefully, the long-range goal is to allow these trees to become a protected ongoing forest, providing a natural habitat for the wonderful diversity of wildlife in Indonesia.
