OGYAKARTA: More than 2,000 people participated in bike-to-work and bike-to-school promotional events staged on Yogyakarta's Alun-Alun Utara square Monday morning.
The participants -- civil servants, private-sector employees, students, police and soldiers -- represented 30 different bicycle clubs.
"We have to support this program to help Yogyakarta be an environmentally friendly city," Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X said.
Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudianto said the program would benefit the city by reducing pollution levels and global-warming contributions.
"It's also good for our health," he added.
The campaign also aimed to remind people to respect cyclists on the roads.
Herry said the city administration would allocate funds to construct designated cycle routes if their numbers increased significantly.
He encouraged Yogyakarta residents to get to work and to school by riding bikes. -- JP
