The Attorney General's Office (AGO) has suspended Ratmadi Saptondo, head prosecutor in Boalemo regency, Gorontalo province, for alleged involvement in extortion.

Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said Tuesday he had signed a letter asserting the suspension and demanding internal-affairs officials investigate the case.

"The maximum penalty is dismissal as public investigator, but whether Saptondo will be fired depends on the results of the investigation," Hendarman said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Saptondo came under the spotlight following public circulation of a recorded telephone conversation between two men, allegedly Saptondo and Subhan Umar, a member of an auction committee within Boalema's regency administration.

In the conversation, Saptondo expressed dissatisfaction with Boalemo Regent Iwan Boking and a number of other administration officials about an amount of money he had received.

Saptondo also spoke of threats to arrest a number of top administration officials for their possible involvement in corruption cases. (dre)
