The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday arrested Arifin Hamzah, former Indonesian consul general based in Kinabalu, Malaysia, on graft charges.

Arifin was accused of charging double tariffs to applicants for immigration documents in Malaysia between 1999 and 2005.

Arifin left the KPK building at around 03.00 p.m. He refused to answer journalists' questions and directly got into a prison car which would take him to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police detention center.

KPK spokesman Johan Budi confirmed that the commission had made the arrest.

"Today we have arrested AH," he said referring to Arifin Hamzah.

Arifin was Indonesian consul general based in Kinabalu for the 1999-2000 period. He is one of the nine suspects in the graft case.

The other suspects are former chiefs of economic, information, social and cultural affairs at the Indonesian consulate general in Kinabalu, identified by their initials as MTM and RE.

The anti-graft commission also named three chiefs of immigration sub directorate at the consulate general's liaison office in Tawai suspects in the case that has inflicted Rp11.7 billion in losses on the state. They are identified by their initials as AN, KS and MT.
