Letter: BPKP didn't audit fire truck procurement

Referring to your article on the verdict against Medan Deputy Mayor Ramli Lubis by the Corruption Court for embezzling state money in the procurement of fire trucks (The Jakarta Post, Oct. 9), which mentions that the fund, among others, was used to bribe auditors of the State Development Finance Controller (BPKP), we make the following clarification:

The BPKB never carried out any audit of the financial reports of the Medan City government, especially in connection with the procurement of fire trucks.

What happened was that the BPKP helped the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to calculate the state financial losses in connection with the case.

Based on the results of our calculations, we concluded that the fund, among others, went to two officials/auditors of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK). Both of the officials have returned the money to the KPK, as admitted by KPK spokesman Johan Budi.

The BPK and the BPKP have different basic functions. The BPK is an external auditing agency, which is responsible for auditing the usage of the state budget. The BPKP is an internal auditing agency, whose duty is to help improve and enhance the operational and financial performance of the government.
