Newly appointed National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said Wednesday the police were committed to maintaining security at the Asian Beach Games (ABG), which kick off this weekend.

"I have seen to it that they have prepared themselves to secure the international event," Hendarso said during an inspection of the security preparations at the Bali Police headquarters.

"As well as units from the Bali Police, there will be reinforcements from the National Police from Jakarta as well as 20 police dogs and eight horses," he added.

He did not provide details on the number of back-up personnel.

Bali Police officers are tightening security by increasing inspections, especially at the main entrance points to the island, including Gilimanuk seaport, which connects Bali to Java, Ngurah Rai International Airport, Ubung Bus Terminal and Padang Bai seaport, which connects Bali with West Nusa Tenggara.

"Besides the regular units, officers from special units, such as the Mobile Brigade and Anti-Terror Detachment 88, are now also inspecting those who come to the island. We are especially checking their residential documents," Bali Police spokeswoman Adj. Sr. Comr. Sri Harmiti said earlier.

"I've also been told that there are more intelligence officers deployed to detect any possible threats during the sporting events. In short, there has been a zero tolerance approach to security because we don't want to put any lives at stake."

She added that 1,312 police officers had been deployed to secure the international event, with back-up from officers from the National Police and soldiers from the Udayana Military Command.

Udayana Military Commander Maj. Gen. Hotmangaradja Panjaitan said the military also had done its best to prepare support for the police in securing the prestigious event.

There will be more soldiers maintaining security than police officers.

"We will deploy 3,200 soldiers to secure the event, especially the VVIPs that are going to attend," Panjaitan told reporters after attending a security simulation at the Bajra Sandhi square in Renon on Wednesday.

He said more soldiers -- about 10,000 -- had been placed throughout the island to step in as reinforcements for those tasked with securing the event.

"The reinforcements will be deployed only if there is something wrong and we consider we need more units," he said.

To date, 11 high-ranking officials from participating countries, including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and several state ministers, are scheduled to come to the event, the most prestigious sporting event to be hosted by Indonesia in the past few decades.
