Trial busway gate lacks power

JAKARTA: The newly installed automatic gate restricting access to the busway lane on Jl. Prapatan, Central Jakarta, is still waiting for new electrical cabling to start trial operations Thursday or Friday. The gate now relies on an emergency generator.

"We wanted to use the power supply from the nearby busway shelter but when we tested it, the supply was inadequate. We have asked the electric company to supply a separate power line because it's not practical to rig up a generator at every stop," the head of Jakarta's transportation agency M. Tauchid Tjakra Amidjaja said Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The gate is meant to prevent vehicles other than Transjakarta buses from entering the dedicated lane. The gate will only open for Transjakarta buses. Other vehicles using the lanes will get stuck behind the gate were police will ticket them. The trial will run for two months and, if successful, be applied throughout Jakarta. -- JP
