A Merpati plane bound for Timika, Papua, stalled on the runaway of the Sultan Hasanuddin airport in Makassar on Monday, delaying other flights.

The plane, carrying 165 passengers, stalled at about 10.30 a.m. local time as two of its tires went flat. No one was injured.

Merpati spokesperson Purwatmo said the pilot had aborted the takeoff because he felt something was wrong after the plane had traveled about a quarter of the distance down the runway.

"The pilot decided to stop the plane for the sake of the safety of both passengers and plane," he said.

He added that all passengers would be moved to another Merpati flight.

The airport authority is working to remove the plane from the runaway. People from surrounding areas have gathered around the airport to witness its removal.

Because of the incident, at least seven flights into and out of Makassar have been delayed.
