A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Central Sulawesi on Monday afternoon.

According to the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency, the epicenter of the quake was located 90 kilometers (kms) southwest of Tolitoli in Central Sulawesi, or 350 kms northwest of the provincial capital of Palu, at a depth of 33 kms below sea level.

The quake hit at 1 p.m. local time; no damages have been reported so far. The earthquake was felt strongly in Palu as well as in the restive regency of Poso.

Antara news agency reported that people in Tolitoli had panicked and had rushed out of their homes when they felt the powerful tremor.

"The earthquake was so strong that people who were standing were tossed about," Ridwan, a Tolitoli resident, said.

School children and civil servants fled their school and office buildings as they were concerned the buildings would collapse.

No damage or casualties were reported, but Tolitoli regent Ma'ruf Bantilan alerted local officials of possible damages and even casualties.
