JAKARTA: Information and Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh said his office would carry out an intensive public campaign to educate people about the upcoming elections.
"The quality of next year's elections will depend on public participation. We still have six months ahead to boost public knowledge of the polls," he said Monday.
The ministry and the General Elections Commission (KPU) signed a memorandum of understanding regarding public education on the elections.
Nuh said his office would broadcast a series of ads on television and radio networks to inform the public about the elections.
A recent survey by the Indonesian chapter of the International Foundation for the Electoral System (IFES) found that 80 percent of voters had either little or no knowledge about the new electoral process.
It said only 12 percent knew the election will take place in April. --JP
