Villagers from Julah in Tejakula, Buleleng, tow (see photo) a pregnant cow behind a boat into open sea as part of a local traditional ritual.
The cow, which is five months pregnant, was thrown out to the sea about 3 kilometers from land Monday. The villagers believe the animal was impregnated by a village elder.
During the ritual the man, who was caught red-handed having sexual intercourse with the cow two months ago, joined the boat trip in order to throw away his clothes to to symbolize him discarding his sins.
Julah customary village head Ketut Sidemen said the ritual, called gamya gamana, or freak weeding, and had been conducted there for generations. The decision to perform the ritual was made a local residents meeting.
In line with customary regulations, the perpetrator, identified only as PS, 70, was sanctioned to fund the expensive ceremony, which aimed to cleanse him of any bad influences.
Luh Ketut Suryani, a professor and activist, deplored the sancation against PS.
She said drowning a cow was baseless because sexual intercourse between a human being and am animal could not cause pregnancy due to the different chromosomes and genes of the two.
"The cow is not guilty, why shoud it be drowned? Why don't just use a symbol like what was done by the perpetrator?" she said.
Suryani's said she was concerned dealt with the financial situation of the owner, who lives below the poverty line.
"The cow, which has a high price, had to be thrown away. It will be a pity for the owner, who is already poor and is now forced to lose his priceless belonging." -- JP/Alit Kertaraharja

To be fair, there is no evidence that the cow was raped... It may have been in heat for all we know, in which case it would have gladly accepted a sexual advance from just about anything. Regardless, forcing this ceremony on the cow was wrong, esspecially considering you can't impregnate a cow.
Poor thing. :(

While this is plain stupid and sad, many of the people commenting on this are the ones that eat beef and the cow is not treated very humanely before being cut up and packaged. So when you talk about castrating the man and all other rubbish, bring a change in yourself too.

What a senseless and terrifying death for that poor animal, whose only crime was, being in the company of stupid humans.,,On judgement day, I wonder what God will have to say to the man that caused all this pain and terror to that poor cow.,

A man can have intercourse with any animal but, based on the current state of science, can not impregnate anything except another human, not a cow, dog, goat, chicken, duck or even an ape.
Sorry about that, but that is just the way it is.
This is also why Viagra is better for treating Erectile Dysfunction than powdered rhino or deer horn and a lot cheaper.

dear hadian,
what "whole situation" do we have to understand?
you are saying that the cow is killed in the name of tradition and we have to accept that?
cant the human race realize that animals are also living things and they are as frightened as us when their death is near? this cow was killed for no valid reason at all and it should not be accepted or tolerated, even if it is a tradition.
this is simply shameful

I'm so glad my cow lives in Australia.
She can cavort around wearing whatever she likes.
She does of course run the risk of being propositioned by some creepy letch, but at least the deviant will be punished and she will be given a fair go.
