State owned power company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN)'s president director said on Monday that the company planned to introduce a 30 percent increase to basic electricity rates in 2010.
PLN president director Fahmi Mochtar said, as quoted by Antara news agency, "The increase is part of our plan to achieve self- sufficiency by 2012."
"Self-sufficiency means PLN will finance itself from internal money and loans, not from government subsidies."
Fahmi said with the rate currently at 7 US cents per kilowatthour (kWh), the increase would be reasonable compared to electricity rates in other countries in the region.
Electricity rates in Malaysia, The Philippines and Singapore were 10, 15 and 20 cents per kWh, respectively, he said.
Fahmi said the Indonesian people's purchasing power would be stronger in 2010. (dre)
