AKASSAR, S. Sulawesi: The fires that hit Makassar city in South Sulawesi on Wednesday and Thursday claimed two victims and demolished at least 30 houses.
On Thursday at around 1 p.m., a fire swept through a packed residential site on Jl. Maccini Gusung, Makassar district, demolishing at least 25 houses.
On Wednesday in the middle of the night, a fire killed two people, Daeng, 60, and his granddaughter, Anisa, 4, who were trapped in their house in Antang area. The fire also destroyed three nearby houses.
The largest fire in the past 30 years in the area hit Maccini Gusung on Thursday.
The authority are yet to discover the cause of the fires.
Most of the victims failed to save their properties as they were taking a nap at the time. The fire blazed fast through the crowed residential area. As a result, dozens of wooden houses were damaged and demolished.
The Makassar city fire department urged residents to be more careful during the drought.--JP
