Local police have blocked access to Wijayapura seaport, the only gateway to the Nusakambangan island prison in Cilacap, Central Java, raising speculation that the Bali bombers' execution may have already taken place or will do so by tonight.
Police cleared the port area and strung barbed wire across entry points. Dozens of armed personnel and hundreds of other, unarmed guards are posted at the docks.
The unprecedented development raised speculation that Amrozi, 47, Mukhlas, 48, and Imam Samudra, 38, may have been executed or that their execution may take place Monday night.
A source inside the police told The Jakarta Post on Monday the execution by firing squad had already been scheduled. "It's going to be one of these nights."
Journalists, who have been waiting at the docks for days now, were told not to enter the port
Earlier in the day the prisoners' families and lawyers were denied entry to the prison. Police told them they did not have permission from the District Attorney's Office.
"We only want to visit them. It has nothing to do with the execution," said Ahmad Michdan, coordinator of the Muslim Defense Team (TPM) legal team representing the convicted bombers.
The Indonesian government has said executions would take place early November and the three convicted terrorists have exhausted their legal options to countermand the death sentence. (dre)
