The South Korean Embassy introduced new sounds to Jakarta last week through the traditional musical instrument gayageum, at a cultural show held Thursday and Friday.
Gayageum is a traditional Korean string instrument like a zither, with between 12 and 25 strings.
The Sookmyung Gayageum Orchestra, brought to Jakarta by the embassy, entertained the audience with masterful renditions ranging from traditional Korean songs to international pop songs, such as The Beatles' "Let It Be".
"It represents the lives and emotions of Korean people for more than 1,500 years since around the sixth century when it was invented," embassy counselor Yoon Moon-han said in a statement Friday.
Several public figures, including Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, government officials, scholars, artists and diplomats, attended the two-day music festival, which was held at the Usmar Ismail Hall in South Jakarta.
The event was part of a 10-day cultural event which started last month, featuring, among other things, Korean ceramics and cuisine.
