AGO to request review of Tommy's court win

The Attorney General's Office will request a judicial review of the Supreme Court's recent verdict which affirmed Tommy Soeharto's right over Rp 1.23 trillion (US$111 million) currently frozen in a Bank Mandiri account.

AGO spokesperson Jasman Pandjaitan told reporters Tuesday the request had been made on behalf of the Finance Ministry.

"The minister has appoint the AGO as the government's attorney. We are preparing the plea," Jasman said.

The dispute about the money started when Tommy's automotive company PT Timor Putra Nasional relinquished its assets to the now defunct Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) in 1999 as a guarantee against an outstanding Rp 4.57 trillion debt to the state.

In April 2003 IBRA resold the assets to PT Vista Bella Pratama for a mere Rp 512 million.

At time of sale the assets record excluded the Rp 1.23 trillion deposited by Timor.

The unaccounted monies then became the subject of a legal dispute between the government and Vista Bella, which the Corruption Eradication Commission later found to be affiliated with Timor.

Jasman said the AGO would also file a refusal should the Court issue any approval allowing Tommy to withdraw from the once- frozen account. The ministry has argued the funds belong to taxpayers as Tommy had allegedly acquired it illegally through his company Timor. (dre)
